What to Look for When Buying a Dog Kennel

Having a dog is awesome – I should know, I adopted three!
Having a furry friend means you have to be responsible and perceptive to their needs. One of the best ways of taking care of your dog is by buying them a dog kennel if you plan on crating them. While choosing a dog kennel should not be difficult, you should ensure that you choose one that is a fit for your dog.

There are many things that need consideration when buying a kennel. Here are some of the most important things to keep in mind:

The Cost

While you cannot put a price tag on the happiness and comfort of your dog, the budget available can greatly determine the kennel you can afford. It goes without saying that most cheap kennels are not good. You should also understand that just because a kennel is expensive, it does not mean it is the best. Do a lot of research and visit a few stores, you will definitely find a good dog kennel that will fit your budget.

The Size

The size of the dog kennel should be an important consideration. When it comes to kennel size, the bigger the better if you’re aiming for the best dog kennel for your furry friend. It is understandable if you do not have a lot of space in your backyard for the biggest kennel you find at the pet store, but ensure that the kennel you buy has enough space for your dog. It should have space for everything your dog will need, i.e. bed, food and water container, and space to move. The kennel needs to be high enough to accommodate your dog when they stand.

How The Kennel is Built

The dog kennel you buy should be strong and escape proof.  This is especially important if you have a boisterous or large dog. Buying a strong kennel will give you peace of mind because your dog will not only be safe but that they cannot tip over the kennel when they are jumping around or playing.

Little tip: Ground anchors are a good way of securely planting the kennel to the ground.

Easy Set Up

Most dog kennels are flat-packed and need to be assembled.  Generally, choose a kennel that is easy to assemble; assembling a dog kennel should not take more than 1 hour – even if it is your first. While buying a complete kennel is also an option, choosing the one you can assemble is a much better choice. It will be easy to disassemble the kennel and move it to let’s say a shadier part of your backyard.

Final Thoughts

While there other things that you might consider, the above-explained are the main things to look out for when buying a dog kennel.
